As part of Lewisham’s Black History Month celebrations, Therapy 4 Healing hosted a free Health Fair at The Hummingbird Club, attended by 134 people. The event centred Afro-Caribbean elders, many from the Windrush generation and provided a day of culturally sensitive health education, community connection and wellness activities.
The focus this year was on heart health and blood pressure awareness, delivered through a powerful collaboration between Black-led VCSE organisations, local NHS teams and community volunteers.
Attendees were able to:
● Speak with Black GPs and medical students from King’s College London
● Take part in Falls Prevention MOTs with the NHS Lewisham Falls Team
● Ask questions to specialist pharmacists on medication, herbal remedies and health travel
● Receive free blood pressure checks
● Enjoy dance sessions, Caribbean food, raffles, music and peer support
20+ Hummingbird volunteers helped deliver the day, supporting catering, hosting and wellbeing care for older and more vulnerable members. Feedback on the day was overwhelmingly positive - many participants said they’d never had a chance to ask these kinds of questions before in such a relaxed, respectful space.
Cultural Heritage & Legacy
This event was intentionally designed as more than a health check - it was a celebration of Afro-Caribbean heritage and a living tribute to the Windrush generation. The room was filled with the warmth of Caribbean food, music, storytelling and intergenerational connection. Volunteers shared memories, medical students listened and learned, and elders were honoured as knowledge-holders. The event upheld the values of dignity, healing and cultural pride - proving that health equity must also include joy, belonging and cultural recognition.
